I am having seemingly random disconnects of active RDP sessions (I am actively typing or otherwise interacting with the desktop) when connected over the VPN connection. The attempted to reconnect 1/20 pops up and proceeds all the way through 20 then drops. Once the session drops I can open a new session and connect again.

What you've essentially done is setup a VPN AND setup RDP access through the firewall (opening port 3389 to the world). You shouldn't allow RDP access through the firewall at all if you want to limit it to VPN users. Disable that rule completely for RDP. You might be able to "fix" this by adding a specific route to the Ip of the RDP server with a netmask of 255.255.255.255 - most specific route will always win, but really as everybody else has mentioned changing the subnet handed out by the VPN server is a better fix.

Assuming you want to make that happen only from the outside (Internet), then simply do not allow RDP (3389) through the firewall. They would connect via the VPN, get an internal IP address, and then use the internal IP, or internal DNS, name of the server to connect.
