Internet Protocol (IP) is the method or the set of rules governing the transmission of data packets between different devices via the Internet. IP is the layer 3 protocol in the OSI networking model. IP makes it possible for devices, working on different platforms, to communicate through the Internet. The Internet Protocol enables each computer on the Internet to communicate with other computers through the exchange of packets of digital information. There are also eight higher level protocols that run on top of the Internet Protocol, and provide additional functionality for different applications. The Internet Protocol (IP) is the most important communications protocol in the Internet protocol suite for relaying data across network boundaries. It essentially establishes the Internet. In the past, IP did not provide the connectivity; It only specified how packets are supposed to be created. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3). SMTP is a protocol used for sending mail, while IMAP and POP3 are used for receiving. Almost all Internet service providers support all three protocols.
